Improving prosperity for immigrant women in Northumberland

Prosperity for Immigrant Women

Northumberland County Economic Development is working closely with Northumberland United Way on a project that will work to enhance the economic prosperity of rural immigrant women in the seven townships of Northumberland County.

Status of Women Canada is providing funding to Northumberland United Way  for the project, which was selected through the Government of Canada's 2013 call for proposals entitled Opening Doors: Economic Opportunities for Women.

Women across the County, community members, local champions, agencies and private businesses will be involved in identifying needs and promising practices that meet the needs of immigrant women in the community. Local women and partners will also evaluate the cultural and gender competencies of community agencies in delivering services to immigrant women. This assessment will identify gaps in policies, programs, services and decision-making processes at the community level.

This infographic shows the countries and jobs represented by immigrant women who participated in our needs-assessment survey.

A Community Action Plan for immigrant women will be developed to address the challenges hindering immigrant women's economic prosperity. In addition to new strategies, the action will:

  • build on existing strategies that several local agencies developed for women and girls to make them accessible and relevant to immigrant women and
  • where specific programs and specialized initiatives for newcomer women exist, the Plan will consider whether a similar or adapted model could be used by other local agencies.

Needs-Assessment Report

A critical first phase of the project consists of a needs-assessment survey on (1) immigrant women and (2) community-service providers catering to the County's immigrant and newcomer communities. Read the report and learn about the top 10 needs identified by immigrant women. The report also contains recommendations based on the the key findings from the needs assessments.
